Outdoor Lighting Explained
Residential outdoor lighting is typically low-voltage lighting connected via buried underground wiring to a timer box that is installed out of sight either outside your house or in a basement. The timer controls when the lights turn on and off and converts the line voltage of your house to the low voltage suitable for installation outdoors in the ground. Wires are typically buried approximately six inches beneath the surface of the ground. The lights are encased in watertight enclosures that can withstand rain and snow while keeping the bulbs within those housing dry.
